Marsh Cinquefoil at Foxglove Covert

Marsh Cinquefoil (Potentilla palustris) is a wetland plant with star shaped, purple-red flowers. They can grow up to 50cm tall and flower between May and July.

The Marsh Cinquefoil at Foxglove Covert is currently flowering and can be seen on the edges of some wetland areas around the reserve. Marsh Cinquefoil five petals and five sepals which are the same deep magenta colour. The petals are much smaller to the sepals, so the sepals can be mistaken for petals.

Most Cinquefoil (Potentilla) species in the UK have yellow flowers, such as Silverweed (Potentilla anserina) and Tormentill (Potentilla erecta). The colour of the Marsh Cinquefoil therefore sets it apart from other species in the Potentilla genus.

Keep an eye out for Marsh Cinquefoil along the edges of ponds and in marshy, boggy wetlands.

Reserve Access: Open, Field Centre Closure Tues 17th June

Wednesday 4th June 2025 |

Access is currently as normal and the reserve and field centre are open as usual.

The Field Centre will be closed on Tuesday 17th June for one day. The reserve is still open.

The Field Centre will resume normal opening hours on Wednesday 18th June.

Dragonfly Walk

Sunday 20th July 2025 | 1pm-3pm

Spot dragonflies and damselflies on this guided walk led by dragonfly county recorder Keith Gittens. Enjoy a leisurley walk around the reserve’s ponds and pools, and learn all about the Odonata species found at Foxglove Covert.
